With the weight of expectation of a nation of 1.3 billion on her shoulders, Li Na the Chinese No 7 seed from the Yangtze river port of Wuhan won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros beating the Italian Francesca Schiavone in today’s final, 6-4, 7-6 (0). “Of course I was nervous, but I didn’t want to show my opponent,” Li said after her victory. Undoubtedly the experience of having competed in this year’s Australian Open final when she lost to Kim Clijsters, would have helped her.

Roger-Federer

Roger Federer today beat Novak Djokovic in their semi-final clash at Roland Garros by a 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. He finished the match off in fading light at after half past nine local time as the night was setting in. It brought to an end Djokovic’s remarkable 43-match winning run, which began with Serbia’s Davis Cup triumph in December last year. He had not been beaten since the same opponent, Federer, beat him in London in November.
