Google’s long awaiting unveiling of its social media strategy to take on Facebook took place yesterday, as it presented Google+ to the world. When Larry Page took over from Eric Schmidt as Google’s CEO he immediately prioritised Google’s social media strategy – so much so that employees’ bonuses are tied to its success.

According to a report published yesterday by Inside Facebook Gold, the world’s most successful social media site is having a little blip in its growth. Even though worldwide Facebook picked up an extra 11.8 million users in May, the rate of growth is slowing as that figure was down from the 13.9 million people who joined in April and significantly down on the average of 20 million joiners in an average month in the last 12. Inside Facebook Gold tracks its figures by analyzing Facebook’s advertising materials .6 million US users unplugged themselves in May.

It is normal practice around the world for broadcasters to urge their viewers and listeners to “follow them” on Facebook or on Twitter. But not any more in France. The French government is coming down hard on what it terms “clandestine advertising”: namely the promotion of a brand outside the boundaries of recognized advertising.
