Abramovich

The riveting theatre between the two Russian oligarchs, Boris Berezovsky and Roman Abramovich, has largely concluded. The cast of billionaires giving testimony has now ended and all that remains is for Mrs Justice Gloster to hear testimony from experts in Russian history and law, and for the QCs to sum up their respective clients’ cases, and for the judge to consider her verdict, which is not expected to be until the Spring next year.

The London Conference on Cyberspace ended yesterday with the Foreign Secretary, William Hague who had chaired the event, issuing diplomatic warnings on the question of international state sponsored cyber attacks telling countries to bring these ‘under control’. It was assumed by most that he was primarily referring to China and Russia, saying that such attacks are ‘not in their interests’

It is a case that will last for several weeks and will captivate the media with some £3.2bn at stake. Chelsea football club’s press shy owner Roman Abramovich yesterday sat at London’s High Court and formally listened through headphones with a Russian translation to the charges against him filed by his former political mentor and business partner Boris Berezovsky. Lawrence Rabinowitz QC, acting for the sixty five year old Mr Berezovsky told Mrs Justice Gloster that his client was seeking “in excess” of $5.5bn (£3.2bn) from Mr Abramovich.

Russian Arctic

The Russian Arctic, one of the world’s last unconquered drilling frontiers, is to be opened up after yesterday’s formal joint venture agreement between two oil giants. ExxonMobil, the world’s biggest oil company and Rosneft, Russia’s state controlled oil giant formalised a partnership to develop oil and gas, in which $3.2 bn will be invested in developing the Arctic Kara Sea. The signing ceremony took place in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in the presence of Russia’s prime minister Vladimir Putin.

International Space Station

Russia’s space agency and its mulit-national partners have said that they plan to let the International Space Station (ISS) fall into the ocean when it reaches the end of its lifecycle. Why? Because left alone the ISS would be an enormous bundle of space junk that posed too great a risk. “After it completes its existence, we will be forced to sink the ISS. It cannot be left in orbit, it’s too complex, too heavy an object, it can leave behind lots of rubbish” said Vitaly Davydov, deputy head of Russia’s space agency.

Chernobyl_Nuclear_Power_Plant

Ukraine is marking the 25th anniversary of the world’s worst nuclear accident. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday visited the Chernobyl power plant site to attend a memorial service. The anniversary comes at a poignant time with reinvigorated global protests over nuclear power in the aftermath less than two months ago of a devastating earthquake and tsunami that has devastated Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant.
