George Harrison White Album

The surviving Beatles and their families paid tribute last night at the British Film Institute in London to the late George Harrison at the premiere of Martin Scorsese’s 3 and a half hour documentary tribute to the Beatle – George Harrison: Living in the Material World. The documentary covers Harrison’s rise to fame as a Beatle, his indifference to Beatlemania, his spiritual searches, his womanizing, his dedication to his philanthropic work and his career in film making. It was made with the full collaboration of Olivia Harrison, George’ widow. Scorsese said he had made the film because he was ‘fascinated’ by Harrison.

Beethoven

The Quatuor Danel, Manchester University’s resident string quartet, will tomorrow night perform Beethoven’s Quartet in G, Op 18 no 2. The string quartet piece which was lost in 1799, was last performed over 200 years ago. It will be a close approximation to Beethoven’s original composition, which has been reconstructed by Barry Cooper, professor of music at the University of Manchester, and Beethoven expert.

Pink Floyd animals

Pink Floyd’s famous flying pig has floated up and over Battersea Power Station once again, almost 35 years after the cover shoot for the album, Animals. The stunt is in honour of the re-issue of the Pink Floyd back catalogue Why Pink Floyd…..? which begins today. A new inflatable pig had to be found by EMI because the original one, which has been kept in a workshop in Halesworth, Suffolk, had developed a leak.

R.E.M.

Thirty one years is a long time in Rock ‘n Roll, and R.E.M. have been aging gracefully, but after this time, they have announced that that are splitting – it is amicable and without drama. Despite maintaining a level of critically acclaimed work in recent years, perhaps it is just an acknowledgment that the the muse has actually departed.
