The largest ever haul of precious metal ever discovered at sea has been announced. The U.S. exploration firm Odyssey Marine Exploration has determined that the wreck of the SS Gairsoppa, a U.K. cargo ship sunk by a German U-boat in 1941 which it found 300 miles southwest of Ireland and 4,700 metres underwater, earlier this year, contains 200 tons of silver. The value is some £150 million.

A Melbourne web domain seller has received death threats after revealing the details of a fraud scam, according to a report in SC Magazine (Secure Business Intelligence). It is an alarming tale that reveals a new type of criminal activity facilitated by the digital revolution. Michael Gilmour was threatened with being killed if he did not take down a series of blog articles that warned domain name buyers of the fraud which related to advertisers being conned on the basis of fraudulent traffic.

Judicial sentencing is to be allowed to be televised, the justice secretary, Kenneth Clarke, has today announced. The ban on filming in the law courts is to be overturned in an attempt to improve public understanding of the justice system and to demystify the legal process. “The government and judiciary are determined to improve transparency and public understanding of courts through allowing court broadcasting. We believe television has a role in increasing public confidence in the justice system” said Clarke.

The number of libel cases in which claimants claim that they have been defamed online has more than doubled in a year – and the growth of social media is almost certainly a factor, according to new research published by Sweet and Maxwell’s Lawtel and Westlaw UK services, legal information providers. The number of reported defamation cases in England and Wales where the subject claimed to have been defamed on blogs or on social media, rose from seven to 16 during that period, according to the Sweet and Maxwell statistics. There were only two such citings in 2006-07.
