The International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations that oversees the global economy, has been on the receiving end of a “large and sophisticated cyberattack whose dimensions are still unknown” according to the New York times report yesterday. The IMF told its staff and its board of directors about the attack last Wednesday but did not make a public announcement at the time.

Google has become a “political tool” vilifying the Chinese government. So reports Reuters yesterday citing the warning issued in the overseas edition of the People’s Daily, the leading newspaper of China’s ruling Communist Party. The Beijing newspaper warned Google that its ongoing statements about Chinese hacking activities could hurt its business.

Someone in M16 has a sense of humour. British Intelligence has announced that MI6 and GCHQ cyberwarfare units took on an al-Qaeda internet based English language magazine. Inspire was intended to recruit “lone wolf” terrorists by giving basic advice on how to leave a trail of mayhem and destruction. The operatives hacked to the website and left their own distinctive message.

A report today from Reuters states that two Chinese military officials have released a party sponsored article that confirms that China is making cyber-warfare planning a top military priority. The essay by scholars from the People’s Liberation Army’s Academy of Military Sciences has been published in the China Youth Daily, a Communist Party run paper.
