The Indian prince, the Nawab of Pataudi, who captained India in 40 Test Matches passed away aged 70 on 22nd September. His achievement in becoming a top international cricetker is remarkable for the fact that he only had one functioning eye. His right eye was pierced by glass in a car accident on 1st July 1961 thereby making it hard for him to judge the length of bowling. He never in public complained or cursed this intervention of fate.

Accepting a glass of glass of coconut water mixed with honey from a Dalit and a Muslim girl, 74 year old Anna Hazare ended his 12 day fast on Sunday morning in front of forth thousand celebrating supporters. Dressed simply in traditional white Indian clothes and cap, invoking the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, the anti-corruption activist has captured the collective imagination of India in just a few short months. He has now spent a night in hospital in Delhi, where he is on a liquid diet, and doctors say that his condition is stable. Hazare ended his fast after MPs expressed agreement with certain changes to anti-corruption legislation.

An Indian film, Aarakshan (Reservation), directed by the well-known Bollywood filmmaker Prakash Jha and starring Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, has today been released into nationwide controversy. The northern states of Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, and the Punjab, and the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, have each banned the film due to fears it may cause law and order problems, even though India’s censors approved the film for unrestricted release.

England defeated India yesterday inside 4 days at the Second Test Match at Trent Bridge by 319 runs – a massive margin having conceded a first innings deficit. In fact, they demolished India who arrived in England as the best ranked Test side in the world, just as ruthlessly as they swept India away in the first Test Match at Lord’s by 196 runs.
