It is half-time in the Barclays Premier League. With most teams having played 19 or 20 matches out of 38, and attention switching to the FA Cup it is a good time to take an objective view about what has happened so far and where we go from here as we move onto the “business end” of the season.
We have had some wonderful upsets to the established order, making this a Christmas season to savour.

Well it may only be the Club World Cup which is not always high on the radar of football fans, but it is a great title to acquire. Barcelona are now Club World Champions after strolling to a 4-0 victory over Brazilian champions from last season, Santos. Lionel Messi scored two magnificent goals as Barcelona, holders of the European Champions League, showed themselves to be a class above Santos to claim the Club World Cup for the second time on Sunday in Yokohama in Japan, having previously won the title in Abu Dhabi in 2009.

Write Roger Federer off at your peril. The 30 year old Swiss champion, possibly the greatest player ever to have played tennis, has endured what for him was a comparatively disappointing season – with not one grand slam to his name for the first time since 2002. But yesterday he showed the world that he is still at the pinnacle of his sport, with a 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in just over two-and-a-quarter hours to claim the 70th title of his career, winning the end of season Barclays ATP World Tour trophy at London’s O2.

It was inevitable, it seemed, that today would be the day that Sachin Tendulkar, finally achieved the historic milestone of a hundred international hundreds. But the hopes of a billion adoring Indians were dashed as the Little Master fell just six runs short of the historic milestone in front of a packed stadium.
