Solar Flare event sunset

Charged particles have been hurtling towards Earth at a speed of 600 miles per second (how about 4 million miles per hour if you can grasp the concept of such a speed) from the biggest solar storm in five years according to NASA – some ten times stronger than an average “solar wind”. The Earth’s magnetic field has been bombarded by this “X-class” flare. Space weather experts had warned of the potential for serious disruptions to satellites, power grids and communications networks.

The Israeli secret service Mossad has this week opened up its archives surrounding the remarkable capture of the Adolf Eichamann, who was responsible for co-ordinating Hitler’s “Final Solution” which was designed to exterminate European Jews. Some six million Jews are believed to have died at the hands of the Nazis and their collaborators during World War II.

Apple’s relentless surge continues. Figures reported by market intelligence analysts Asymco show that Apple has achieved an incredible 75 per cent of all mobile phone profits in the final Quarter of 2011. This remarkable figure has been reached despite the company being nowhere near the largest phone maker, having a mere 8.7 per cent of the global mobile market (that is to say all mobiles, not just smartphones).

With just days to go before her 111th birthday, Florence Green has passed away in her sleep at a Norfolk care home on Saturday. Born on 19th February 1901, she enrolled in the Women’s Royal Air Force (WRAF) in September 1918 aged 17 with just two months to go before Armistice Day. She is believed to be the world’s last surviving First World War veteran. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable era in British history.
