The enjoyment of leafing through a printed newspaper may not be with us in the foreseeable future if the trend discerned by Pew Research Center (in its report issued on Monday entitled State of the News Media 2012) continues apace.

It is a sure sign that the world is getting a lot smaller. A company founded by a (now) 27 year old in his room at Harvard University in 2004 is set to become worth $100 billion, according to reports yesterday from the Wall Street Journal. Facebook’s IPO launch as a publicly traded company has long been anticipated as it has a large number of private shareholders – in January 2011 it said that it would exceed 500 shareholders – which meant that under SEC regulations it would need to file public financial reports by 30th April 2012. This has meant that an IPO has been inevitable for some time now. The process could now formally begin within days, as early as Wednesday with an IPO to follow in three to four months.
